A. —En arabe, addition de la consonne n (un) à la suite de la désinence casuelle du nom, pour exprimer la modalité «indéfini». Un nom est indéterminé grammaticalement quand il est «nu», ce nom pouvant alors, selon son type, être affecté ou non de la nûnation (...) un outil grammatical, la nûnation rappelant les adj. indéfinis franç. un, une, des (R. BLACHÈRE, M. GAUDEFROY-DEMOMBYNES, Gramm. de l'ar. class., Paris, Maisonneuve et Larose, 1970, p. 378). En arabe, l'expression de la modalité «indéfini» se réalise par l'adjonction de la consonne n (ar. nun) à la suite de la désinence casuelle du nom, d'où le terme de nounation (MOUNIN 1974).
B. —Vieilli. Son nasal; p.méton., action de prononcer ce son. Les quatre voyelles nasales an, in, on, un, nunnation que les Latins représentaient à la fin des mots par un m, les Grecs par un n, et que les Portugais représentent encore aujourd'hui par \nunnation ancien m sténographique (A. DE CAIX DE SAINT-AYMOUR, La Lang. lat., Paris, Hachette, 1868, p.48).
